Your essay must be submitted as a WORD document, formatted in the MLA style, and rigorously proofread to college standards. You can lose up to 5 points for failures in the presentation. Your essay must include: 1. A brief introduction to the film including important contributors, production background, a short plot summary, and an overview of the film’s narrative and visual styles. A thesis statement that articulates your interpretation of the film’s meaning and its relationship to the political, social, and artistic context in which it was produced. This thesis should clearly state your viewpoint and the points you will address to support and develop it. ( 0-2 points) 3. A discussion of the film in terms of its historical context. In what ways is are the form and content of this film a reflection of the periods discussed in this unit? What particular social, political, or artistic concerns of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s (or both) does the film demonstrate? (0-3 points) 4. A discussion of the film’s style and technique. In what ways does the film conform to the conventions of the “Hollywood Style” and in what ways does it violate these expectations or break new ground in the visual and structural elements? ( 0-3 points) 5. A discussion of this film in as an example of a particular genre. In what ways does the film conform to the narrative and visual convention of its genre? How do these choices reflect the historical, political, or social context in which the film was made? (0-3 points) 6. Support for each of your points with references to specific elements in the film and/or to ideas presented in the readings and videos.)
